I've owned every single Apple TV starting with the second generation. I recently purchased the Apple TV 4K and I'm finally (really) retiring the second generation (sitting in my garage attached to a TV I never use) and the third generation (attached to the TV in my family room) which I rarely use.
I moved my fourth generation Apple TV from my bedroom to the family room so my grandchildren can play Alto's Adventure and Alto's Odyssey. They still prefer to play in my office at home.
I recently purchased a 4K monitor to be used for my home security system. I haven't purchased it yet, so I had an excuse to finally get the Apple TV 4K. Both are in my office.
The new Apple TV supports 4K (both SDR and Dolby) and the video output is gorgeous. It has a faster processor. What I really like about it is the new updated and improved remote control. I really hated holding the old remote control upside down. Now I can see at a glance whether I have it right side up or not.
It's slightly larger than the previous model, but the form factor remains the same. It doesn't come with a HDMI cable so be sure to purchase one if you don't have a spare HDMI cable.
I'll probably get another one for my bedroom when (if) I upgrade the TV to 4K. I don't want a Smart TV and I'm waiting for a large monitor (at least 55 inches) without a tuner.
I noticed that the HomePod takes preference over my 2 Apple TVs as the Home Hub for my HomeKit smart home. The 2 Apple TVs are on "standby" ready to take over as the Home Hub, if necessary.
