Common Pauraque, Estero Llano Grande State Park, TX, 2/12/21.
This species of tropical nightjar is common in Central America, but in the U.S. is only found in south Texas. They spend the daylight hours on the ground pretending to be part of the leaf litter - a trick they are very good at. This one slipped up a bit, letting the white of its tail show. Still, if someone hadn't shown me where to look I would never have seen it.
