Die Geschichte gehört vor Allem dem Tätigen und Mächtigen, dem, der einen großen Kampf kämpft, der Vorbilder, Lehrer, Tröster braucht und sie unter seinen Genossen und in der Gegenwart nicht zu finden vermag. So gehörte sie Schillern: denn unsere Zeit ist so schlecht, sagte Goethe, daß dem Dichter im umgebenden menschlichen Leben keine brauchbare Natur mehr begegnet. Mit der Rücksicht auf den Tätigen nennt zum Beispiel Polybios die politische Historie die rechte Vorbereitung zur Regierung eines Staates und die vorzüglichste Lehrmeisterin, als welche durch die Erinnerung an die Unfälle Anderer uns ermahne, die Abwechselungen des Glückes standhaft zu ertragen. Daß der tätige mitten unter den schwächlichen und hoffnungslosen Müßiggängern, mitten unter den scheinbar tätigen, in Wahrheit nur aufgeregten und zappelnden Genossen nicht verzage und Ekel empfinde, blickt er hinter sich und unterbricht den Lauf zu seinem Ziele, um einmal aufzuatmen. Sein Ziel aber ist irgend ein Glück, vielleicht nicht sein eigenes, oft das eines Volkes oder das der Menschheit insgesamt; er flieht vor der Resignation zurück und gebraucht die Geschichte als Mittel gegen die Resignation. Zumeist winkt ihm kein Lohn, wenn nicht der Ruhm, das heißt die Anwartschaft auf einen Ehrenplatz im Tempel der Historie, wo er selbst wieder den Späterkommenden Lehrer, Tröster und Warner sein kann.“ (Friedrich Nietzsche, „Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen“)
