We must be willing to both offend and be offended, in order to have any relationship or discussion with any substance or value. If something offends you, good. This means that you believe in something, and are willing to defend it. If you can successfully defend your position based on the merit of your argument rather than someone's feelings, and/or belligerence, you just may hold the right position and principles, at least for the topic at hand. If you need the government or some authority to protect you from thoughts, ideas, or values that you disagree with, you likely have nothing worth defending to begin with.
