The Barreleye Fish: Macropinna microstoma a relatively small deep-sea fish that's best known for its highly unusual transparent, fluid-filled dome on its head, through which the lenses of its eyes can be seen. M. microstoma has been known to science since 1939, but wasn't photographed alive until 2004. Old sketches do not show the transparent dome, as it is typically destroyed when brought up from the depths. This fish normally hangs nearly motionless in the water, at a depth of about 2,000 ft (600 m) to 2,600 ft (800 m), using its large fins for stability and with its eyes directed upward. The eyes have a barrel shape and can be rotated to point either forward or straight up, looking through the fish's transparent dome. Thought I might share one of the latest images I took. These are neurons infected with a viruses that induces expression of fluorescent proteins. Before a neuron fires an impulse, neurons are purple. Right after they fire an impulse, they churn out the green fluorescent protein you can see - so, using this virus, we can tell which neurons have been activated by anything from a drug to a sound. #brain #science #drugs #neuroscience
