Today in International Men’s Day. It is a time for us to not only praise, encourage, and mentor the men and boys in our lives, but also to reflect on the many issues men have. It is a time to learn, to grow, and to possibly get involved in helping to fix these issues. Men are incredibly important to society, and are often demonized as a whole, more than they are praised. However, men keep the our world running by doing some of the most dangerous, dirty, and necessary jobs in our society. Today is a day to acknowledge all the things men do for us, and celebrate manhood. I hope all of you will join me today in celebrating #InternationalMensDay. Now for a few statistics (amongst the many): Men commit suicide at 3.5 times the rate women do (white men making up 7 out of 10 suicides). 100% of men (and 0% of women) in the United States are required to sign up for Selective Services or risk up to a $250,000 fine or 5 years in prison. Men make up ~91% of all inmates and receive according to one study, “It finds large gender gaps favoring women throughout the sentence length distribution (averaging over 60%), conditional on arrest offense, criminal history, and other pre-charge observables. Female arrestees are also significantly likelier to avoid charges and convictions entirely, and twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.” Men account for ~90% for all those killed in workplace accidents. Right now, ~43% of all children live only with their mother (and it is growing). According to one study of the Court System in Massachusetts, women were awarded primary residential custody 90% of the time. Fatherlessness is connected to a number of childhood issues including (but not limited to): 4 times more likely to live in poverty (47.6%), 5 times more likely to commit suicide (63% of suicides), 20 times more likely to have a behavioral disorder (85% of all children from a fatherless home), 9 times more likely to be a high school dropout (71% of total), 20 times ...
