It sounds like he was somehow shocked at Rand Paul's line of questioning so he did what he does so naturally; he lied. Then after the meeting, he realized that it will be easy to prove he lied if anyone is willing to look. (The media isn't, but there are plenty of independents who are), so he'd better get his story straight. He then quickly got out the new story in hopes that he won't be charged with perjury.
