As with fire, the use of tools likely predated the evolution of Homo sapiens, and may stretch back 2.6 million years or more. Today, there are a number of animal species that use tools. Anthropologists believe the use of tools was an important step in the evolution of mankind. Some of the earliest tools may have been sticks, stone, and fire.
