The Mandarin Dragonet - aka The Mandarin Fish

Found in the warmer waters of pacific inshore reefs and sheltered lagoons, from the Ryukyu Islands south to Australia, you will find the colorful and beautiful Mandarin fish. Its name derives from its extremely vivid coloration, reminiscent of the robes of an Imperial Chinese mandarin. These guys move slowly over their domain, dining primarily on copepods, worms, fish eggs and various gastropods. The mandarin fish is threatened by overfishing, destructive fishing methods and destruction of habitat. Unfortunately, due to their strikingly beautiful coloration and cute movement, mandarin fish are highly sought after by the aquarium trade. ............................................................................... #earth #science #nature #animals #education
