From Tim Popkid on FB, an anecdote of which I have no memory whatsoever, but, well, it sounds like us: On to today’s shirt, I Saw The Mr. T Experience Play At Flipside and All I Got Was this Lousy T-Shirt. This was a homemade shirt that was created for when the Mr. T Experience played at Flipside records in Pompton Lakes, NJ in 1996. This was their first trip out east after Love As Dead came out and folks in town were excited. The always excellent Third Year Freshman were ‘opening’ for MTX that day. It had the makings of something epic. Unfortunately, The Mr. T Experience never arrived. Tom from Third Year Freshman tried his best to fill time, but it became obvious it just wasn’t going to happen. These shirts were distributed to the people in attendance and most of them took a sharpie to alter the T-Shirt before donning it and heading to that evening’s show at Maxwells. There were a lot of red shirts in the crowd that night that said things like “I wish I saw the Mr. T Experience…” / “I never saw the Mr. T Experience…” and my personal favorite “I didn’t saw the Mr. T Experience…” Me, I couldn’t bring myself to draw on mine. I ended up interviewing Dr. Frank and Joel that night for my college newspaper and asked them what happened. As I remember it, they missed an exit on the NJ Turnpike and then it was something like 30 miles until the next exit. They said that in California, they tend to have exits more frequently and we could learn a lot from their roads. Obviously there was no ill will from the band and everyone had a blast at the Maxwells show. The Dr. even apologized on stage. They were loved by night’s end. And all I got was this lousy T shirt. https://www.facebook.com/timpopkid/posts/4737865762894616 #music #casual_wear #minds
