Internet bullying and gatekeeping works, and I'll tell you how it works. It's not easy, though. It's not just "be rude and they'll leave". It's a concerted effort to make your spaces extremely uncomfortable to them. They need to be buried in a sea of negativity whenever they pop their heads out. And they won't leave right away, oh no. They'll first try to rebel and stay on despite the hate. But soon they'll find themselves logging in less and less, and will eventually quit using the platform/interacting entirely. So I was looking into the twitter ban the wave and I found a theory that makes sense, and fits into premise of the medium article "cataloguing hate". The theory is that they construct "ecosystems" of twitter users based on a few key accounts (typically large ones with a decent follower base) It's logical to say that people of a particular political persuasion would follow a large account of that political persuasion. So they ban everyone following those large accounts, including the large accounts themselves, thereby deleting entire ecosystems of political thought from the platform.
