Caribou, also known as reindeer, flourish in some of the world’s harshest places. Their principal home is tundra—land that is too cold for trees to grow. Did you know? They’re able to see light wavelengths around 350-320 nanometers, which is well outside of the so-called visible spectrum. The ability to see the shorter wavelengths allows reindeer to spot lichens, which absorb UV light and appear black in a sea of highly reflective snow.
