Where does your pup fall? Stenotic nares is part of the brachycephalic syndrome, where the cartilage of the nose develops in a way that that allows less air the enter through the nasal cavity. This problem is genetic, often so because stenosis also means a flatter muzzle. As you can imagine, it causes a lot of issues with breathing and can even collapse the larynx which can lead to death. Mostly this problem is simply managed by keeping the animal at a healthy weight, out of the heat and kept from over-exertion. However with severe cases, ala-vestibuloplasty, a surgery involving widening the nares by removing sections of said nares, might be necessary. The prognosis of the surgery is generally quite good. #animals #dogs
