Flying Foxes are nocturnal, but they don't seem to get much sleep during the day. This colony (about two hundred individuals) seemed to be keeping itself awake with its noisy bickering. Small fights would erupt every ten seconds or so. #animals #nature #Australia #myphoto

A beautiful Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) feasting on the nectar of a Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta). #birds #nature #Australia #myphoto

Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) are a common sight in my neck of the woods, but I don't often see them in the wetlands, especially not perched right where the bush meets the bay. The individual pictured appeared to be alone. We crossed paths several times this morning and this was probably my best photo. Even when I encounter a common species, and in an area familiar to me, I still find myself in awe of the beauty of the natural world. #birds #nature #Australia #myphoto

As the sun sinks low in the sky a pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) drink rainwater from the fork of a gnarled old Eucalyptus tree. #birds #nature #Australia #myphoto
