More discussion is needed on sourcing news from social media. Facebook, specifically, is a potent feedback mechanism. The loop is simple - you scroll, you provide input via likes, and you’re fed more of the same. Since more than 4/10 Americans get their news from social media (see https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/05/16/facts-about-americans-and-facebook/) and there is no distinction between entertainment and news, the user is confirming their own biases in perpetuity. This is quite literally the self-radicalization of the user by their own volition. How is this different than putting a pill in front of someone, having them take the pill, then giving them a “like” option that puts more pills of the same in front of them? In principle, it’s no different. Below are examples - they indicate why I’ve come to Minds. The news that almost half of the USA consumes is derivative of preference. No requirement of fact or accuracy standards exist. Attached - Left half shows a discussion on immigration. I’d provided multiple sources and evidence on deportation rates of the current president and his predecessor. Next is what happens when you disagree with the emotional narrative propagated by the mainstream. Sure, there are fires in the Amazon, but data is clear on their severity. An odd situation is developing. We are more connected than ever, yet we are more self-radicalized. The people below vote - they vote consistently and they are motivated.
