The right to bear arms as understood by the founding generation was an individual right.. The context of the militia is only a matter of scale of the same principle of self preservation.. We have a right to defend ourselves, communities, state, country as individuals, and to withdraw our consent to be governed through force whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive. The arms suitable to this scale of self preservation is what the 2A sought to protect.. The 2A protects the tools not the actions, save for keeping and bearing; insurrection is rightly unlawful. However, founders like Jefferson saw a lack of discontent as lethargy in the people.
