I’m not the most ardent Danganronpa fan, but I’ve generally seen the main story of the first and second games and I like them well enough. In particular, I enjoy the exaggerated characters and their designs. It’s a nice blend of being anime-ish and cartoon-ish.

So, when I saw manga of it, I was curious what that would be like. I considered whether to look at the manga for the first or second game, and figured I’d start where it begins, and took a look at this one.

I won’t have too much to say about the story. The story follows what happens in the game. However, it’s told at a very frantic pace. To some extent, I don’t think that’s the fault of the author/artist who had to adapt the series. It starts out with a large amount of characters and has to cover a lot of stuff.

So, I wouldn’t say that this manga is for people who haven’t played the games. It’s told in too rushed a fashion with too much going on. I think someone new coming into the series would get lost with how much is going on and how little time there is to breathe (none). It’s also overloaded with text because it has to get everything out. If you don’t already know what’s happening, it would be hard to keep track of it all.

At the same time, I’m not sure it’s exactly for people who have played the games, either. It just retells what happened in the game. I think this would mostly be nice in that, if you have a favorite character, it provides more artwork for them.

There’s a slightly different take of Leon’s ending, but other than that there’s not much difference. I think, I also wanted to see how it went because I always felt like Leon got especially screwed over, and I liked his character. I’m a bit disappointed this doesn’t really add much for him.

In the end, I wouldn’t really recommend this unless you want to see some more art for the series. I personally wish they would have taken the time to flesh out the story more. I know it would be a lot of work, but they could have done a lot with it. As it is in this form, I doubt someone who picked it up would remember any of their names. They might get to the end and say, “Oh, his name was Leon? I forgot.” It would have been nice if there was time to get to know the characters.

That’s all I have to say for this one!
