My very first camera was a Kodak Brownie 110 when I was 10 years old. After all these years, I never thought Kodak was still around and that I would own another of its products.
I have a large collection of negatives from my film SLRs which I've wanted to digitize. It would have cost me a lot to have a service do it. And they probably would not treat them as well as me.
I read an article about the Kodak SCANZA which started me researching it some more. I've scanned some of my negatives in the past using a regular scanner and it was a very time-consuming process. Everything I read about the SCANZA indicated that it will simplify the process quite a bit.
I decided to take a chance and order it along with a fast memory card. Yes. It can be used standalone and save the scanned photos in the memory card. Or it can be tethered to your computer via USB which also powers it. It comes with a USB converter so you can plug it directly into an outlet. It also comes with its own LCD screen which can be tilted!
It comes with numerous adapters to handle all sizes of negatives and slides. I am only interested in the 35mm negative and slide adapters. Of course, it comes with a USB cable and a HDMI and video cables in case you want to tether it to a TV.
The first time I pressed the power button, the device would not turn on. I was panicked and I didn't want to think about the hassle of returning it. It turns out the power button requires more than a momentary press. Whew.
It is easy to use. Insert the adapter, slide the negative through using the LCD to ensure it is centered, and press the scan button. It comes with a manual, but you won't need it. You can actually view it on the LCD.
The scanner is 14 Megapixel (native) and 22 Megapixel (interpolated) resolution. The quality of the scanned photos is very good, more than good enough to handle the photos taken with film SLRs with the possible exception of very expensive film SLRs.
I'm very pleased with the Kodak SCANZA. I've already scanned 6 rolls of negatives (24 exposures each) and processed some photos. Here's an example.
It's going to carefully scan all of my negatives and process the photos from them. But I've got lots of time on my hands.
