So, you've decided you need (and/or want) a computer despite my advice. Okay. I've got another advice for you.
I've always had a UPS device since I got my first computer. And I didn't get one because I wanted to use my computer when the power goes off.
I invested in one because the main cause of problems with electronic devices is the sudden surge (usually when power comes back on after a failure, but it can happen at any time) and when it is suddenly shut down because of a power failure. Uneven power (voltage fluctuation) is also detrimental to your computer (and other electronic devices such as your TV.)
I've only used UPS devices from APC and I've invested a lot of money in them. I've replaced batteries and entire UPS devices when they've worned out. Guess what? None of my computers ever died from power-related problems.
I've lost track of the numerous models I've owned, but I currently have four (yes, 4) of the APC Back-UPS XS 1500 for my computers, router, modem, switches, external drives, etc.
One of the things I really, really like with this model is the ability to turn off the annoying alarm that goes off due to power failures. I used to hate hearing a chorus of these alarms throughout my house when the power went off. And there was no way to silence them other than turning the UPS off.
I also like the panel display which provides a lot of information including line voltage and amount of battery left to run the existing load.
And, of course, I like the USB connection to my computer which allows the computer to gracefully shut down when the power fails.
I highly recommend an APC UPS for your computer and your TV. It's an inexpensive insurance for your expensive investments.
