Zeth helped his daughter off the transport car. He left car open for the husband and wife who thanked him and stepped in. Amnika watched the car slide onto the main track, and shoot away.
Taking his daughter's hand, Zeth guided Amnika around a group of students and to the lift. He let go of her hand to put his thumb on the DNA scanner. The door slid opened, and they stepped inside. The floor glowed under their feet, and they shot up the tube, past the rock and up into the towers to the top.
Looking down at his daughter, he saw her eyes were wide. She shifted a little then took his hand.
"I apologize, Amnika." Zeth put his hood on. "I didn't realize I was projecting." He paused for a moment then chuckled. "Even adults forget sometimes." He felt Amnika squeeze his hand.
The lift reached the top, and the door slid open.
There stood Zakkon with his son and his adviser, Rodgistan.
"You wanted to see me?" Zeth asked he stepped out of the lift. Amnika clung to his hand.
"Well," Rodgistan said, "I've been Advisor for a long time, and I'm ready to move on."
"We need our highest level Inersien to move to head instructor," Zakkon said. "Unfortunately, the last one we had passed on a few days ago."
"I heard," Zeth said, "Three hundred and fifty-six cycles. He lived well."
"Rodgistan will take his place, which means we will need an advisor," Zakkon said.
"You have the support of the Natisiens," Rodgistan said, "You have a lot of experiences to account for."
"We thought that you were an obvious choice," Zakkon said, "I hope you don't turn down the offer. We could really use you."
Zeth glanced down at Amnika. She found some debris on the floor and was trying to poke it with the toe of her shoe. He tugged at her hand, and she stopped.
"I could take the position." Zeth adjusted his hood. "but I'm not sure..." He trailed off. "I haven't worked with leadership much."
"Right now, Afkistan has taken up the position of head instructor," Zakkon said. "He is still young, but he has enough experience to run things for a short time."
"He didn't want to keep the position?"
Zakkon sighed. "I don't think my son wants any position in high authority. I have no complaints, he is a good educator, after all." He held his head high, and a thoughtful smile appeared.
Zeth and Rodgistan agreed. He taught the higher level students, and they all loved him.
"This allows Rodgistan to groom you for the position," Zakkon continued. "It'll only be for a couple of years. Your experience with the Natisiens and your travels is more than enough to be my advisor."
Zeth nodded, "Then I accept." He could feel Amnika tug at his hand. He looked down at her to see that she attempt to peer out of the window facing the city.
"I suspect I will be needed for a couple of higher level Inersiens in a few years, anyway." Rodgistan looked at Amnika.
She was oblivious that he was talking about her, but Zeth wasn't. He tugged on her hand to get her to pay attention. She stopped fidgeting and looked up at Rodgistan.
"I found her dropping energy bursts from the bridge into the pond in the garden," he said.
Amnika turned red. Chuckling, her father pulled her hood over her head.
"I had to explain to her," he said with a chuckle, "That the fish didn't like that."
"Oh, really?"
"There weren't any other Inersiens there, and Natia was watching her then," Rodgistan explained why no one stopped her. Natisiens could not sense energy.
"I didn't mean to hurt the fishies." Amnika pulled her hood down over her face.
They all laughed.
"It's okay, Amnika," Rodgistan said, "You didn't know, but you do now, right?"
"Yes."
"You won't do it again?"
"No, I won't hurt the fishies again," Amnika said, still holding her hood over her face.
There were a few more chuckles.
"I'm sure you won't," Zeth laughed.
