Veni, vidi, vent.
I came, I saw, I complained.

So I had two things hit me earlier today. Both decent ideas in and of themselves. One appeared in my own head as I was thinking about Character Generation in RolePlaying Games. The other appeared on FB (yes, I am on there, mostly for the cat pics) and I thought both ideas were worth posting up here, especially after reading @mikehopkins blog earlier about how all life is connected.
First, NOONE is average. It is virtually impossible to find a so-called "average" person.
I'm not saying that they don't exist. But they are not "average." Something will always stand out in them, or about them. They might appear average, but they might have a lot of skills, or a natural talent you know nothing about. What you don't see about someone when you first meet them might be noticed over time as you hang around them more.
Which leads to a corollary. The more you know someone, the harder it becomes to describe them. At least that is how it is for me.
I keep a notebook of Non-Player Characters in any tabletop RPG I am running just so I have a quick reference if I need to remember any details. I use a few words to basically describe them so I know how I want to play them off, or let the players know that something is up. An NPC Merchant that was old, flustered, and always busy, suddenly doing something out of his normal routine, and the players are alerted that Something is Going On.
The second idea is what came from FB. "If the definition of insanity is to do the same thing again and again while expecting a different result, and the only way to become an expert in something is to do it over and over again until you get the best possible outcome, then the only path to mastery is through insanity."
I remember a cartoon in which the father of a character told said character while he was practicing playing hockey to, "keep doing it until you get it right, then keep doing it until you can't get it wrong."
Not exactly insanity, but it is interesting anyway. Make mistakes, learn, repeat.
I will probably continue Life Lessons in the future, but that is enough for now at least. I hope you enjoyed.
