Common Causes of RV Lights Flickering

Flickering RV lights can get old fast. One minute you’re enjoying a calm evening ride and the next, your ceiling lights stop working. Unreliable RV lights can get under your skin, especially if it happens when you’re out with your family on a trip. There are many reasons that this happens. 1. Voltage Fluctuations

Check your voltage using a multimeter. Your 12V system should read around 12.6V when fully charged and the shore power should sit at 120V. Check the wire connections at the light fixtures, breakers and battery terminals. Tighten what needs tightening. Be cautious because working with electricity requires turning off power before diving in. 

1. Falling Light Bulbs or Fixtures

Sometimes the issue is as simple as a bulb reaching the end of its life. LED lights are long-lasting but not immune to failure. Incandescents are worse, especially in bumpy conditions. 

Swap the flickering bulb with a new one to see if it fixes the problem. If not, the fixture may be failing. Worn-out sockets or damaged wiring inside the fixture could cause poor contact.

1. Weak or Dying Battery

If your RV runs on a battery and lights flicker when you’re not plugged in, the battery might be on its last leg. A weak battery struggles to maintain consistent voltage. 

Charge the battery fully and see if the problem persists. If it flickers right after charging, you’re probably dealing with battery degradation. 

1. Converter or Inverter Issues

The converter turns shore power into 12V DC power for lights and appliances. IF it’s failing, you will see flickering lights or other odd behavior. Inverters, which turn battery power into AC power, can also glitch.
