The Mirror Could it be that people who make us angry are simply mirrors who reflect back our own flaws? Are we angry because we subconsciously see something in us that we don't like? Have we projected ourselves onto them, and then misattributed their error with our own? If that's true, think about how freeing that could be. This may be the greatest tool in our tool chest. It's extremely difficult to analyze ourselves, because we're helpless victims of internal-perspective blindness. Our deepest nature is obscured from our immediate senses. This is especially true when it comes to discovering our truest motives behind any action. Our natural inclination is to justify our actions by creating a false narrative, and we are far too eager to believe this false narrative and erect it as truth in our mind. But what if a mirror existed that when looked upon would reveal to us every flaw we couldn't possibly see otherwise--- a mirror that provided us with an external view? And what if that mirror was accessible to us simply by studying those people that cause us to react negatively? If we can find out what it is about them that we don't like, then the corollary is a defect in us. And if that's true, perhaps this whole caustic and divisive social climate may be our biggest opportunity to learn something profoundly imperceptible about ourselves. Pause, think, and look inward. What is it that's pushing our buttons? What's stinging our nerves? It helped me to sit down and really think about specific examples of people or situations that produced anger or disgust in me. Then I started peeling back the layers of what motivated me to be mad. It turned out that I wasn't mad about their worldview or actions, (like I thought I was). I found hidden, ugly motivations lurking inside. Not that those hidden, ugly motivations negated the error of the person.
