Luke 10:42
“Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus says that Mary of Bethany “has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” These words of Jesus are quite remarkable. Everything we see and experience in this world will be taken from us.
This mortal world is ever-changing, never staying the same. Each moment is different from the next. This is life; as we know it.
Time is a thief. Everything is taken away from us. In time we lose mobility, sight, hearing, and clarity of mind. Our health fails, our life ends, nothing is left for us.
Death is the face of this ever-changing world. Death steals away your loved ones. It takes them from you when they die, and in death you lose them all. Death takes away everything you own, everything you have worked for, everything that matters to you in this world.
Nothing is exempt. Nations rise and fall. Civilizations totter and collapse. One age passes into another. Cultures vanish. Religions disappear. Time takes everything.
Everything is in turmoil. Wars and rumors of wars, violence and killing are daily fare on the evening news. Violence in Orlando, anarchy in Dallas, carnage in Nice, rebellion in Turkey, nothing is stable.
Everything changes. Changes in ancient moral codes and traditions sweep away the old civilization. Mass migrations replace existing cultures with new ones. The very concept of human nature and sex is changing.
Technology changes and in the process changes us. Smart phones and social media have changed our culture. Virtual reality and the robotics revolution will change everyone. Genetic engineering and human machine interface will change what it means to be human.
Everything is subject to change until this mortal world itself is swept away. Time will stop. The world will end. The heavens and the earth will be dissolved. The stars and planets will vanish. Judgment Day will come.
Today there is still time. Today there is one thing necessary, the good portion that will not be take away from us. In a world in which everything is taken away from us there is One who will not be taken from us.
That good portion is Christ Himself. God the Son, the Second person of the Holy Trinity became man. He became the good portion which if chosen will never be taken away.
The eternal entered time and the immortal embraced mortality. God became a man. He became mortal so that through Him we could share in His Immortality. He died on the cross so that He could be the death of death. Jesus rose from the dead so that He could be ours and we could be His forever. Truly, Christ is the good portion, the only thing that if chosen will never be taken away. Choose Christ.
