When it comes to activism, a lot of people tend to think of activities like attending protests, or getting arrested, to name a few. But in reality, there are many ways activists can make a difference. For example, organising a sit-in, writing letters to notable political leaders, or even boycotting specific businesses or products, stopping them from all forms of activity.
Even if all of that might seem like small gestures, these forms of activism are crucial because they can go a long way in supporting macro-activism. Social movements take time to gain strength over time so every little step matters.
Of course, when you are just starting out, it can be overwhelming to figure out where you need to start out. Hence, the first thing you need to do is to understand what some of the most important activists out there are doing. Consider the work done by the highly acclaimed activist Anelia Sutton - one of the best activists of our time.
Sutton has also taken on the roles of an author, humanitarian, minister, and independent journalist. Many of you might even know her as the founder of the IRON Sharpens IRON Council, which is a legal advocacy community on Facebook. She is also the host of “Ain’t No Fun When the Rabbit Got the Gun,” which is a popular series on social media.
During the beginning of her career, Sutton served in the United States Navy career and a couple of years later, she became a veteran with an Honourable Discharge. Sutton initially adopted the alias ‘Anne Smith’ as a professional name to protect her daughter and then discontinued it in early 2022. However, she used that alias in 2022 when she launched a comic book as a secret identity for the super hero, Sunshine Reign.
In 2017, Sutton focused on establishing IRON Sharpens IRON Council, which first began through social media platforms like Facebook as a legal advocacy community in order to help her daughter who had been wrongfully committed to a state hospital by a corrupt prosecutor. In time, the IRON Council’s community had significantly grown and allowed Sutton to have an established career as a thought leader, social activist, and motivational speaker.
Moreover, Sutton has also been revered for running a prestigious social justice movement called, Clear Her Name, which she started to save her daughter and two grandchildren. And after many years of struggle, she even wrote a book, ‘Clear Her Name: A Mother’s Journey in Legal Research to Save Her Daughter”, under her alias, Anne Smith and only changed it to her own name after her daughter’s case was closed.
Her work has become increasingly popular over the years - people have heard her story and have shown their support in any way they can. She made guest appearances on the Montel Williams Show and was even featured in more than 240 media outlets.
Her main goal? Eradicate the corruption that has seeped into the justice system and help empower families through education to fight for their rights and persevere in the face of injustice.
