SGT. WILLIAM CARNEY AMERICAN HERO....

So who is SGT. WILLIAM CARNEY?  Mr. Carney is an American hero that in my opinion hasn't had the respect or recognition that he deserves. Born February 29, 1840, into slavery, became the first African American to be awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR in 1900.

He was awarded the medal for his bravery during the BATTLE OF FORT WAGNER IN 1863. During the battle, under fire and wounded, he refused to let the flag touch the ground and pressed on keeping the flag held high returning to his lines with the flag in hand. 

After his military service he became a letter carrier in NEW BEDFORD  MASSACHUSETTS. Was married and had one daughter. He passed in 1908.

SIDE NOTE AND MY OPINION........... If anyone deserves to have a military base named after someone SGT WILLIAM CARNEY  deserves and earned that honor !
