Hotel McCurdy was opened in 1917. It was here that the hotel would serve for the Evansville Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum. The hotel was used for many events and served many well known guests. It served many new amenity's like circulating distilled ice water for drinking. Construction of the McCurdy began in 1915. The hotel was built on the back of the St. George hotel built in 1874 which was a shining star hotel in Evansville. The McCurdy hotel was named after William H. McCurdy, an industrialist, he was founder of Hercules Buggy Company in 1902. His name was contributed to success in Evansville. The Van Orman Brother's & St. Louis architect Henry Ziegler Dietz designed the Colonial Revival style of the McCurdy Hotel. They went into partnership with William McCurdy to build the hotel. It was the first of it's kind to offer miniature golf, toilet in every room, different restaurants, and a pharmacy. In 1969, after 52 years of service as a community landmark and venue of hospitality for celebrities such as President Richard Nixon, Katharine Hepburn, Etc. the McCurdy closed its doors due to bankruptcy.
