DARPA - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants to “illuminate” the human mind.  The Neuro-FAST Program discusses the priority of “securing” the brain through better spatial and temporal scales.  Infrared light provides solutions needed to achieve single neuron “resolution”, specific brain circuit identification, behavioral identification, and treatment of brain injuries in awake and functioning humans.   A paper published in 2014 discussing "Infrared Neural Stimulation" explains some of the uses of infrared light to stimulate the Central and Peripheral Nervous System, as well as, “modulate” brain function.  The 2014 paper is considered a “Special Section on The B.R.A.I.N Initiative” enacted by President Barack Obama.  Infrared light can be applied locally to a limb, the face, or cranium and generate a “neural” response.  The effects of light traveling through biological tissue has been thoroughly documented.

Modern computing devices such as laptops, mobile phones, watches, and earphones all contain LEDs which emit infrared and other wavelengths of light.  These devices are also capable of generating acoustic waves (sound). Proximity and biometric sensors provide the consumer “demand” for these components to be integrated into everyday life.   Earbuds, watches, and mobile devices all utilize LEDs, infrared, and acoustic technology to provide a “service” or “solution” to you, the consumer.

US Patent 9943698B2 - Cognitive enhancement using feedback (Lockheed Martin) discusses the use of light and sound in specific ways to improve behavior, focus, and productivity.  Signals sent into the eyes and/or ears can “modulate” brain activity and move the brainwaves into a desired frequency range.  This patent also states that the software needed to modify brainwaves can be located “remotely” and sent over the Internet.   US Patent 5289438A - Method and system for altering consciousness explains the “fundamentals” of injecting sound, light, and electrical current into the body to influence brainwaves.

US Patent 7599044B2 uses an array of LEDs in a laptop or desktop computer to pulse infrared light beams into the local environment.  The stated reason is to manage power consumption.  The LED arrays emit focused and “steerable” beams of infrared light to “map” the local environment, determine a nearby “presence”, and render 3D images of the local area.  Furthermore, other “embodiments” of this technology uses acoustic reflections (SONAR) or other light frequencies (Visible Light, Ultraviolet Light, etc.) to create a “detection field”.

US Patent 7599044B2 also states the following - “in yet another embodiment, the detector may simultaneously function as a camera for videoconferencing. In the manner discussed above, a first set of sensors may be masked to function as a video camera, while a second set of sensors is masked to detect reflected infrared beams.”  This is of particular interest considering brain activity and biometrics are able to be “captured” through the camera on any modern device.
