Wired was by far my favorite magazine, in the 1990s. It was super cool and a truly interesting documentation about the emergence of Internet. They had some excellent writers.
I still have this number here on paper. It was about the 3 creators of DOOM who earned $60 million within 3 months from voluntary payments by players. It was shareware - you could play it entirely for free. About 1% of the players gave $20.
