Back in the day, industrial buildings were part of the image of their owner. Like this mill, its structure represented a local family who owned it for generations. It made sense to make it look nice, to build it to last for centuries, repair it and improve it with respect to its previous form. 
These days, the factory is just a number on a screen for some person in a foreign land, that is never going to even see it with his or her own eyes. It can be ugly and sterile as long as it is cheap. Why build it to represent anything, make the form fit its function?
