I am working on a thought here. It is not yet fully formed, but it seems that the more I write/draw, the better able I am to express my ideas. If you can see any flaws in my concept please feel free to point them out. This is a work in progress.
The back story is long and convoluted, so at this point it is not necessary and would probably muddy the waters. Suffice to say that we have ramped up a notch in the #revolution happening WW. And the nasty retoric on both sides has increased exponentially. In order to win - and yes, winning is the goal - I believe we must strive for UNITY NOT DIVISION. But at this point my whole being is bombarded daily with the animus between the left and the right.
Using the normal graph as a visual aid (not as a statistical implement) we can infer that the majority of people - those within the first two standard deviations - exist in a state of Harmony. As you move further out on each side, people become more dysfunctional as they exist outside societally provided connections and interrelationships. To maintain this societal harmony people use specific strategies, predominantly those of co-operation and concurrance.
On the left hand side of the picture, where we find the emotional strategy of concurrence (or agreeableness) being implemented, motivation is towards growth and change, both characteristics of the feminine essence. This correlates with The Political Left, progressive strategies and liberalism. This is also the area where fluidity and emotionality are prevalent, well controlled and well understood.
To balance this there is, on the right hand side of the diagram, The Political Right aimed at maintaining and restoring Order, Tradition, and Continuity and is thus the archetypal masculine stereotype. Rationality and logic rule in this zone. On this side of the population, the strategy for maintaining harmonious relationships is co-operation, a decidedly mental skill, and one which is skillfully weilded and intensely researched.
Analysing the strategies of interaction further, it is suggested that the motivation for achieving harmonious relationships for the feminine essence is tied to emotional responses. At the highest level of intimacy, where concurrence and co-operation meet, the feminine responds in love to the masculine. In understanding this concept it is important to note that this is love as opposed to lust. The masculine, instinctively benefiting from and, at the same time, balancing these emotional responses, uses strategies of reasonable thought, driven by self-interest, to maintain pleasant interaction.
Where there is slightly less connection between masculine and feminine essences, a slightly different dynamic emerges. Civility is maintained here as the individuals on the left of the spectrum call upon empathy to motivate themselves towards loving interaction. On the right however, at more of a distance from the calming effects of love, a need emerges for a different type of self-affirmation. Rational abilities aimed at co-operation with the 'other' direct thewmselves outwards in ambitious plans to impress and attract the emotional input needed for harmonious balance.
Where this system is working well, the feminine displays the character strengths of contentment, tolerance, wisdom, and peace. The masculine counter is confidence strength, integrity, and curiosity. A good recipie for UNITY.
Perfection is not found universally, and at lesser levels of unity between the sides, as detailed above, character strengths are slightly altered. On the Left we now find people who exhibit characteristics such as compassion and fluidity arising out of empathy. In addition they develop a higher tolerance of risk taking behaviours and the ability to be flexible and make changes to one's environment in pursuit of one's goals. On the Right, governed by ambition, the masculine attributes of competition and achievement are strengthened, and tradition and continuity are valued and built upon.
Does this make sense so far? Could you envisage a nation of people living in harmony with joint goals and high levels of unity? I would value your comments at this stage.
Next time I want to describe the increasing dysfucntion that is found when unity breaks down and polarisation starts to dominate the cultural and political scene.
