After a 22 year hiatus from Pikes Peak with the Golf, Volkswagen is returning to Pikes Peak with the Volkswagen ID Pikes Peak Prototype. This Sunday Volkswagen is going to launch the ID R then the following day testing the ID R on a 12-mile hill-climb located in Colorado.
The ID R is built by Volkswagen's motorsport arm to showcase the performance abilities of current electric cars. Secondly, the ID R's purpose is a publicity stunt for the Volkswagen ID range that is due to arrive on roads in late-2019.
The Volkswagen ID R takes on the appearance of modern Le Mans prototype with an aerodynamic package that includes a huge front splitter, centre fin spanning over the rear bodywork that appears to help support the car’s huge rear wing and a multi-channel diffuser element.
Volkswagen is keeping hush about the ID R driveline but, the car is expected to have two electric motors, one for each axle copying what the production ID range is doing.
VW suggests the ID R Pikes Peak represents the “first step in an intensification of the co-operation between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport”. That's the first collaboration between Volkswagen and Volkswagen Motorsport.
The driver for the ID R is the Le Mans 24 Hours race winner Romain Dumas, who took overall Pikes Peak victories in 2014, '16 and '17 in a Norma M20D.
What is your opinion of the Volkswagen ID R Pikes Peak? Is it a genius publicity stunt showcasing Volkswagen ID ranges tech whilst giving us a cool race car or is this car a waste of time for Volkswagen. Please type your thoughts in the comments below and On That Bombshell goodnight.
