I'm going to keep this short.
It has come to my attention that the grammar and spelling helper app, Grammarly, has begun engaging in language policing and identity politics activism. I, for one, am a free speech absolutist. I believe that it is not appropriate for a company that releases a supposedly politically neutral app, and secretly embeds a political narrative and an attempt to shape my language.
Whether or not I choose to use words that others deem "offensive" is not relevant. However, if I choose to use such words, it is entirely my choice. Any consequences that arise from the choices I make would also be mine.
I would also ask this – why doesn't Grammarly recommend that I not use other offensive words, such as curse words, or even basic insults like a jerk or loser? Aren't those also offensive, and "unwelcoming"? What about words that even suggest unpleasantness, such as "grotesque" or "unhappy"? Where do you draw the line? This issue is entirely subjective, and frankly, Grammarly has no right to tell me what I should or shouldn't say.
Grammarly is acting on what is obviously a motivation to push the politically correct agenda, and to engage in blatant virtue signalling. They don't really care about encouraging their users to "be nice" to each other.
Even if their only intent was just to recommend me to be nice, I would still have the same reaction. It is still language policing.
And so, Grammarly, I bid you farewell. I have uninstalled your app and browser extension, and quite frankly I am done with you for good. I do not take those who impinge on my free speech slightly. My right to free speech is far more important to me than a few typos or missed hyphens.
If you feel the same way, I suggest you do the same and say goodbye to Grammarly for good.
