So I finally got around to planting my onions.
I may have made a bit of a mistake... Apparently, just after I planted them I found out that we may get a quick flurry of snow this weekend.
We are just outside the zone that is going to get it, so I am going to let it go for now.
I decided this year to try a trick I was told a couple of years ago. Very basically the idea is that you put down weed matting and you then cut a cross in the matting and grow the crop through the hole.
This will keep the soil warm, protect it from erosion (Not really such an issue here) and also help reduce weeds to almost nothing. I have been told that you can also start onions earlier using this method because the young sets are protected from the cold and wind.
Using matting also helps to keep in moisture... Although it seems to want to pool on the tops as well.. I just hope enough flows through the holes to get to the plants!
While in one bed I used the matting and planted the sets. In the other bed I decided to plant the last of the smaller red onions left over from last year. They were really too small to cook with... I'm hoping that they either grow again or they set some seed. At this point I'll take either!
I also, for shits and giggles, decided that I will plant the last large onion. I'm only hoping for seeds from this... But I would also like to see what happens to a full sized onion when you replant it!
It's not like I am losing anything here! *shrug*
