Another crop to get going.
If you look at what I saw at the garden centre on Saturday then you would be forgiven for thinking that I'm a little late with this one. They had loads of tomato seedlings out on the shelves already!
The problem is that I don't have a greenhouse, a cold frame or a cloche so I will have to wait a little to put my plants outdoors. So with that in mind I decided to wait just a little later than advised.
I had to wait till later on this morning to get the tomato seeds planted because I had to cook the last of the eggs in the packet I was going to use. BTW, side note... The bacon and eggs with a side of toast was wonderful, thank you. B-)
So... Now I have my cells, I'm off again.
I don't need all that many tomato plants. We don't eat many and we can't really keep them more than a couple of weeks beyond autumn unless we render them for passata, salsa or chutney.
There is also the fact that I am pinned down by the amount of space I don't have.
I didn't bother taking a picture of an egg box with soil in it... If you really want to see one, look here.
The plan above is the 4 types of tomatoes. As per usual for me there are 2 seeds per cel. If I need to I will thin them out later. Yes, I really did leave 2 cels empty.
Money Maker - A mainstay of home growing. Good size, average taste and a good solid cropper. I have grown these before. If everything else fails I know these will grow well.
Red Cherry - A good cherry tomato, a good cropper. The last lot I grew had weak stems... No idea why. Tasted very nice though, very sweet.
Gardeners Delight - Another cherry tomato. Not done this one before, reports on the internet say it's a good reliable crop. It's also tangy... Might be good for salsas and the like.
Red Pear - No idea. This is a wildcard. It's the same size as a cherry but apparently has a much nicer taste. The big thing to note is that it is an heirloom. If I like it I can keep seeds for next year.
Hopefully the snows we are having will have cleared up before these are ready to go into the ground.
