Governments and some institutions are imposing censorship on people against their will. This is the reason IPSX is trying to stop censorship on the internet. The internet has made the whole world to be a smaller place and censorship of content removes the ubiquity that the internet has introduced. There are different forms of censorship from filters used in schools to great firewall of China. Below are some of the disadvantages of internet censorship.
Violation of rights
In the US, the internet is protected by the first amendment, but this does not apply to all countries. Companies and schools can also make their own rules for their networks. In most areas of the world, free speech is a right, and the internet should be protected by it. When a website is forced to modify its legal content or when it is shut down, this type of censorship violates the webmaster’s rights.
Limiting educational resources
In most cases, filters get implemented with the best intentions. They are, however, not a cure-all to hiding some appropriate and important content. For instants, censorship in schools is designed to keep out inappropriate content, but this may end up keeping away important content that students might use for learning. Furthermore, if someone is trying to research about information on more controversial topics such as drug use or sexuality to educate himself, then he may not be able to get the resources he needs to be as self-educated as possible.
Widening social gaps
The internet is a global meeting place where you can interact with different people all over the world. It doesn’t matter the language barrier as we have got translators on the internet. You can recognize that you have more in common with other people from different cultures if you find common ground on intellectual and ideological levels. Censorship of the internet gives people fewer situations to learn about other people and identify these similarities.
Cost
It takes resources and time to implement a censorship system either on a small scale within a facility such as a school or on a large scale within a government. In addition to the cost of the equipment and the labor required to set up firewalls, filters and other forms of censorship, the system will need to be maintained. It will need to be repaired and occasionally upgraded as time goes. The money could be invested in some more important issues.
Business issues
Internet censorship can impact businesses negatively. First, businesses cannot be accessed by all potential clients especially when it comes to an international scale. Second, the businesses cannot be able to access the best businesses and websites for services and supplies. When a business owner cannot access certain parts of the internet, he may not be able to compete fairly on a global scale, and he may also not be able to access the best resources for services and products required.’
For these constraints, IPSX is trying to fight internet censorship.
