Peas, Please!

And so it begins!

This being the first actual piece of planting I have done this year, it will not be my last!
This year I am beginning with peas.

Soil in an egg tray

So, here I am!

The pea I chose was the Kelvedon Wonder. This is the one my neighbour suggested after the one I used last year turned out so pitiful.
It's an early, so it can be planted, indoor anytime Jan/Feb with a second planting in June to make 2 harvests a year.

I'm using an old plastic egg tray, one with a lid. I simply filled it with a normal potting compost. Nothing special.
Normally I would use a cardboard egg tray and rip off the lid, but I saw this as a suggestion on a website sometime last year. The idea is that the clear plastic tray acts like a mini-greenhouse... BUT... Because the tray doesn't make a full seal there is still air movement. It won't trap the heat, just raise it.

Peas in position

Ok, I don't need 15 plants... But if there is anything I have learned with planting is that if you want 10 plants... Use 15 seeds!
So, while I only have space for, at best, 10 plants, I'm going to use all 15 slots to grow what I need. I can always give away any extra plants I don't need.

All done

And so here we are all done. You can see that there is a gap to allow air flow, but the plastic should help to raise the temp a bit.

All I did from here was give it a splash of water and put them on a sunny windowsill until they sprout, which should not take long, and with luck I should have them in the ground, outside in about 4 - 6 weeks.
