Built in 1962 in Polo, Illinois, this recently restored Wrightian Usonian house was designed by Verne Lars Solberg. It is quite beautiful and the restoration was done very well. All photos below were taken from vernelarssolberg.com where even more photos and information about this remarkable house may be found… including blueprints!
The following history is also from the site:
"Verne Lars Solberg studied at the University of Oklahoma in 1949 under architect Bruce Goff who was known for his organic, eclectic, and often flamboyant designs. While at the University of Oklahoma Solberg and his wife Lois met Ross and Eleanor Graves (whose father worked the land of Frank Lloyd Wright, in Taliesin, WI) - and it was Ross Graves who showed Verne Lars Solberg the work of Wright and Taliesin. Solberg was a successful commercial architect in the Sycamore area, but examples of his remarkable residential architecture are extremely rare. The McConaughy Residence was built in 1962 as a result of Dr. McConaughy, a chiropractor from Polo, treating Solberg for injuries he received while serving in WWII and the two becoming friends. Solberg was given the freedom to design the house as he saw fit, and the result is a beautiful, inspiring, and timeless work of art. As the Journal Standard wrote in 1962:
'It is called organic because it seems to be born of its surroundings, a perfectly correlated harmonious whole of stone (quarried three miles away), cedar, and glass; and because of its expressive flow of continuous surface wherein walls, ceilings and floors seem to filter in to one another. The stone is laid with bold almost reckless, variation. There are no flat easy to grasp walls; rather, they are as if cast by nature into the walls of the quarry that surrendered them. Now that the dwelling is there, one imagines that the occupants will take root and grow with it.' "
The house was recently listed for sale on zillow.com but is now listed as "off market". Enjoy the tour!
