It is the year 2015.

Marty and Jennifer have gotten married, had kids and Marty now runs a record company. Doc and Clara decided to settle in Hill Valley in 2015 and their kids (teenagers now), go to school with Marty Jr. and Marlene.

Griff has been terrorizing Verne and Marty Jr., posting things on their social media account and generally making their lives miserable. Marty Jr. and Verne decide to steal Doc's Delorean to get payback on Griff and his gang. Their plan backfires and while trying to escape Griff and his gang, an instability in the time circuits, sends them all to 1969.

In 1969, Marty Jr. and Verne get away from Griff and regroup at the school. They set the time circuits back for 2015 and arrive in 2018 only to find out that the world is a lot more technologically advanced than they left it. Robots are walking the streets, humans are living under curfew, Hill Valley has been overrun with invasive advertising, and Griff is mayor. They can't turn without being targeted by advertising for everything from Apple phones, to Mr. Fusion ads. Connecting to the city wi-fi, they discover that Doc Brown is head of research at the Quantum Unified Institute of Physics (QUIP) and they head to talk to him. Reluctant to believe their story, Doc Agrees to help them. Marty Jr. runs to Hilldale to find his parents. Marty is in a wheelchair and Jennifer is his full-time carer. Marlene has been missing for months and Marty Jr. of this timeline is a dark web drug dealer and gangster, wanted by the FBI and NSA.

Returning to Doc's lab, Marty Jr. finds that he was the reason that Marlene is missing as a rival gang abducted her and put his father in the chair. He blames himself and vows to get change things back. Conducting a diagnostic on the Delorean, Doc finds out that the time circuits were remotely sabotaged by someone's drone and fixes the error, allowing the boys to jump back to November 6, 1969 to bring Griff and co. back and prevent the disruptions to the timeline. Before they have a chance to leave, however, the lab is hit by a gang, led by Zapp Tannen, Griff's son (Whom Griff named after Zap Brannigan of Futurama). Doc is shot dead, and Marty Jr. and Verne narrowly escape in the delorean travelling back to November 4th, 1969.

Discovering they are two days early, they decide to wait for Griff and his gang and set up a trap to catch them then they arrive. Exploring their hometown of the '60s, Verne makes an impression on a girl and falls in love and him and Marty Jr. have a bit of a falling out. Setting their differences aside in time to stop Griff and his gang, the boys now have to avoid their other selves. Managing to catch Griff and co., they tie them up and secure them in the Delorean. Verne decides to stay behind with the girl and forces Marty Jr. to go back without him.

Marty Jr. arrives back to 2015 to find things are back to normal and he arrived only a few minutes after he initially left. Throwing knocked out Griff and co. out of the car onto a pile of cans behind the liquor store, he cuts their bindings and leaves to return the Delorean.

Next morning, a ring at the door brings Marty Jr. to the door where a postman is waiting with a letter. He looks at his watch, noting it's Sunday and he shouldn't be getting mail. The postman tells him that they've had the letter at the post office with the specific instruction that it be delivered on December 6th 2015. Marty Jr. takes the letter and opens it, only to discover it's from Verne.

"Marty,

If my calculations are correct, you should get this letter just after returning back from 1969. I Hope my dad wasn't too pissed about the car.

I am doing great and am very much looking forward to seeing you again some day, but I will be an old man by then. Vanessa and I got married after we finished college in 1973 and we had two kids, Megan (after Vanessa's grandmother) and Emmett. Tell my parents that I love them very much and that I am happy. All the best, buddy.

Verne Brown

October 26, 1985"

Marty Jr. grabs the car keys to his (previously his Dad's) Jeep and runs out the door, just as Jennifer and Marty walk in. He drives to Doc's house and finds a concerned Clara who is worried sick and Verne. He sits Doc and Clara down and gives them the letter he had just received. Doc and Clara read the letter and find photos showing their son and his family. Doc looks closely at one of the photos, realizing that he is in the background, looking through the window and says "Great Scott!!"

Credits roll as the screen fades to black...

In a post credit scene, we see Doc standing outside his son's house in 1983 leaving a small box containing a pocket watch with their family photo inside.

credits continue as Jules returns from soccer practice to grab orange juice from the fridge, slamming the door a bit hard causing a photo to fall to the floor. The camera slowly zooms into the photo of Verne, Vanessa, Megan and Emmett and we can see Verne wearing the pocket watch left to him by Doc.
