Texas becomes an independent nation again

157 years ago today in 1861, Texas becomes an independent nation again seceding from the United States.

25 years previously in 1836, Texas seceded from Mexico and fought a war of independence (An event we will cover in detail on this page). After winning that war, they became an independent nation for 9 years until they voluntarily joined the United States in 1845.

Texan hero and current governor Sam Houston was passionately against this move by his state and would be replaced a few months later with a pro-secessionist.
