Dragon Ball: Vegeta (Pt.2)

Vegeta continues his intense training even leaving the confines of Earth. In space he looked to find and challenge Goku. Instead he found a new power, a power that he felt lost to him; the power of the Super Saiyan! That power would serve him well until the beginning of the Android saga. The initial androids were no match for Vegeta but the ones that came after proved his power to be lacking.

Again Vegeta went to train under harsher circumstances and returned to prove himself superior to the current androids. Though in a fit of arrogance he allowed the most powerful android known as Cell to reach his full power just for the thrill of a strong opponent. This back fired massively; Vegeta went down and out against the new Cell.

In the end, both Vegeta and Goku had trouble against Cell and had to leave it in Gohan's hands. Vegeta ended up aiding Gohan in this struggle. Afterwards he intensified his training even further (somehow...) and 7 years passed before the Earth was in any real danger again. This time it was a sorcerer named Bobidi and his fathers creation Majin Buu.

Again despite his efforts he fell short against Majin Buu even after gaining a power boost thanks to his deal with Bobidi. Vegeta wrecked Buu and to make sure he didn't regenerate Vegeta sacrificed himself. It was to no avail however as Buu would rise up anyway. They saved his body and other world sent him back to help a now revived Goku in his battle with Buu. They would emerge victorious but not without help from the Eternal Dragon.

Vegeta despite his flaws and always seemingly being a step behind is a massively powerful character that is tormented by his past. While he comes off as stand offish (especially early on) he eventually warms up a bit even (arguably) to Goku. Despite it all he does cherish his family and the Earth though you'd be hard pressed to see it as he is obsessed with training and finally one day defeating Goku and avenging his loss long ago.
