iMac vs. iMac Pro

It wasn't a difficult decision for me.

I have an old 27" iMac (2010) that needs to be replaced because one corner of the display has black splotches. I also have 2 PCs I assembled myself (around 2007) still running Windows 7. I noticed that one of the 21" screen has a lamp burned out. The only reason why I've kept them is that both PCs have RAID 5 disks and I use both as file servers.

My plan is to replace all 3 computers with one and I wanted to wait until the iMac Pro was released.

I have spent quite a bit of time comparing both models on the Apple Website, as well as reading comparisons and reviews on various technical Websites.

The iMac Pro has faster processor (with more cores), better graphics processor, four (versus 2) Thunderbolt 3 connectors, 10 GB (versus 1 GB) ethernet port, and comes in Space Gray. Otherwise, both have equivalent displays (which is outstanding.)

But the price difference! A fully configured iMac with all the bells and whistles isn't much more than a base iMac Pro.

Since I am not a Pro (photo processing is the most I do on a computer), it was a very easy decision. I decided on the fully configured iMac and ordered it last night.

Oh, about all that disk space I need. I also decided to get a Promise Technology Pegasus3 R4 with 16 TB of HDD Storage.

I'll review both when I receive them (next week) and use them for a while.
