I love Cognac (Brandy). I drink a shot almost every night before I go to sleep. This is a review of Francis Ford Coppola's Small Batch American Brandy named Maria Gaetana Agnesi 1799, The Witch of Agnesi.
Maria Gaetana Agnesi was an Italian mathematician, philosopher, theologian and humanitarian. Francis Ford Coppola named his brandy after her as part of the Great Women Spirits collection.
When I first heard about this brandy, I knew I had to try it. This was one of the reasons why we recently had lunch at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville. It is available at the Rustic restaurant, but I was very disappointed that I could not purchase a bottle at the winery. It has to do with a California State law.
Fortunately, our waiter provided us with the names of two local establishments where I could get it. He even called one to make sure it was in stock. After lunch, we stopped at the store and I bought two bottles (the store only had a total of 4 bottles on the shelf.)
I finally opened one of the bottles last night and had 2 shots. The Agnesi 1799 is very smooth and went down just like a brandy should. I could feel its warmth all the way down. I like it.
I'm glad that I bought 2 bottles and I'll probably buy more in the future. But I'll drink it only occasionally because of its price ($50 per bottle) which isn't too bad. But my favorite Cognac (Rémy Martin VSOP) is cheaper, so it will remain my nightly drink.
