Former Facebook Exec: ‘You Don’t Realize it But You Are Being Programed’

Wherever I go, there I am. I am what I eat -- and I consume stuff besides food.

I would really like to be connected in familial and social spheres. But it seems that there are hardly any connections (?) afforded to me other than what occurs via electronic devices. For instance, after years of telling my extended family that I jumped off the Facebook train, I still get the line: Well, yeah! You saw it on Facebook, right?

A reasonable person might think that other reasonable persons would take notice when a co-creator of a thing doesn't use the thing...and doesn't let his children use the thing. Is that that a reasonable presumption? How many of 'us' have sacrificed Reason at the altar of so-called Social Media?

What to do? How to be? Oh well...

Quotes from Gizmodo article Former Facebook Exec: ‘You Don’t Realize it But You Are Being Programed’

. . . . Palihapitiya told the Stanford audience, ‘The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works,’ Palihapitiya said. ‘No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. And it’s not an American problem—this is not about Russians ads. This is a global problem.’

“Speaking more broadly on the subject of social media, Palihapitiya said he doesn’t use social media because he ‘innately didn’t want to get programed.’ As for his kids: ‘They’re not allowed to use this shit.’

“Then he got even more fired up: ‘Your behaviors—you don’t realize it but you are being programed. It was unintentional, but now you gotta decide how much you are willing to give up, how much of your intellectual independence,’ he told the students in the crowd. ‘And don’t think, ‘Oh yeah, not me, I’m fucking genius, I’m at Stanford.’ You’re probably the most likely to fucking fall for it. ‘Cause you are fucking check-boxing your whole Goddamn life.’”
