I don't like Sweden as a country nor the Swedes as a people very much. There are two reasons. Number one is that they have a nasty imperialistic history loaded with racism toward their non-germanic neighbours. Number two is that they are destabilizing Northern Europe by their unhinged immigration politics. This thing somehow combines them both,
There are a lot of Finns in Sweden. They used to be the largest immigrant group in Sweden since recently but now the Syrians and possibly also Iraqis are more numerous. There are areas in Sweden that used to be Finnish speaking and in the early 2000's Sweden even decided to make Finnish an official minority language.
Many Swedes have had very racial attitudes toward Finns, Balts and Slavs. This might be somewhat surprising since they like to protrait them selves very open and tolerant and they are always lecturing other about racism and who knows what. Currently you see them giving in to the most absurd demands that their more recent immigrant dare to make. You would think they are so apologetic that they just can't stand up for themselves and demand some respect. You'd be wrong. It's all about who is the immigrant in question.
They have no problem demanding the Finnish speaking people to stop speaking Finnish at their presence. An accepted and widely used policy is to forbid Finnish speaking students to speak Finnish at schools. Even at breaks when they are talking by them selves. Nor is a Finnish speakint teacher allowed to use Finnish with Finnish speaking children. How do they even dare! Just imagine if they'd do this to some other groups. The media would go nuts and there would be death threats from all directions.
The articles ( links below in Finnish and Swedish) even mentiones a library that organized a day for the immigrant kids to come and read poetry in their own language, but the Finns were excluded. In all honesty this was a single case a few years back but perhaps the Finns were not considered "real immigrants". The articles also complain about the cuts Finnish radio broadcasts and that the area where Finnish is recognized is now fixed and new municipalities can't join even if they wish.
Don't get me wrong, I hold a firm belief that if people move to a foreign country they should fully integrate to that country and raise their children to that ethnicity by the best of their abilities. I believe the minority status of Finnish language outside the northern areas where it has been spoken for a millenia is absurd. Let the immigrants be responsible fo preserving their own language if they desire to do so. No handouts needed. But it's the hypocracy of the Swedes that gets me, the double standards they hold for different kinds of immigrants. The more demanding and arrogant ones are put on a pedestal. The ones they have always looked down on are still looked down on. The attitude of a colonial master emerges when you scatch the surface. Something is very rotten in Sweden.
