"Threats to freedom of speech, writing and action, though often trivial in isolation, are cumulative in their effect and, unless checked, lead to a general disrespect for the rights of the citizen." – George Orwell
In this day and age where we have “free speech zones” and “hate speech laws”, Orwell’s statement seems to have elevated him to a status of Oracle post-mortem even more. The truth is that the “Freedom of Speech”, a right that we hold dear to ourselves and wear with pride, is at risk. So many have forgotten that this right does not protect that for which we agree with but instead protects the most vile of speech. I may not agree with your beliefs or the statements/actions that you may present, but I will defend tooth and nail for your right to do so. Anything less than that is a detriment to my future, my child’s, and generations to follow beyond that. True courage is how we stand before these vile acts and demonstrate civility and strong character so that we do not lower ourselves to the standards of those who would rather take the lesser road, as it takes very little to fight for that which we agree with.
