After a life of eating food, sprayed by pesticides, this family decided to take the challenge and go two weeks eating only organic food, unsprayed by pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
First, urine samples were taken from each member of the five-person household. Pesticides showed up in spades. Herbicides, fungicides and plant growth regulators were also found in abundance.
"We're eating pesticides," says Vendala, the eldest daughter, in dumbfounded realization.
After the testing, everything in the kitchen is replaced with only organic, pest/herb/fung/icide-free food.
Two weeks later, another round of urine samples are taken and nearly all of the pesticides have disappeared from their bodies.
"We know very little about the long-term effects of eating food treated with pesticides," says Jorgen Magner, of the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. "Especially if you consider that chemicals can be much more harmful when combined together than they are on their own."
It is disturbing to see the high levels of pesticides show up in the bodies of unsuspecting people, but the upside is that after only a few weeks, it seems a detox can almost completely shed your body of the poison.
