IBM Research and Swiss solar technology company Airlight Energy have released an amazing 10 meter high solar structure that resembles a sunflower, capable of producing electricity and water.

The High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system concentrates the sun's energy by up to 2,000 times, converting 80 percent of it into usable energy.  The machines generate up to 12 kilowatts of electrical power and 20 kilowatts of heat on a sunny day.

One of these can power multiple homes and the cooling of the cells produces fresh, drinkable water.

These mechanisms are much needed in a society that is weening itself off of oil, coal and methane as primary energy producers.  It is also an amazing benefit for anyone, anywhere that doesn't have access to drinking water.

On top of all the amazing tech, the designers have also included a large, inflated, transparent plastic enclosure for the mirrors and the receiver.  It keeps the panels from getting wet with rain and covered by dust, as well as protects birds and other animals from being zapped by the intense heat they give off.  Kudos!
