The Atomic Bombing of Japan did not end Japan's willingness to wage war. The deepest top secret of WWII took place in the U, S. Naval shipyards. Two identical US. Navy submarines were made to look exactly alike. Same name, same U.S.N. and both modified identically. Each had the height of its conning tower shortened exactly seven inches in elevation. By shortening these conning towers, America now had two submarines capable of traveling under the Japanese anti-submarine nets strung across the enterence to Tokyo Bay. These modifications were a major engineering feat kept from the prying eyes of Japanese spys. These two submarines won the war without firing a shot!
Using the same call signs and sharing identical crew rosters and using prerecorded voice messages they traveled to Japan under total radio silence, so from all that could be seen and heard, only one submarine, captained by one skipper, set sail that day. At twenty miles outside Tokyo Bay one of them set down under total radio silence, as its twin proceeded on under the anti-submarine net and settled down on the seabed in the middle of Tokyo Bay and also under total radio silence.
Each time an atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, five minutes prior to its detonation the submarine twenty miles out would surface and radio broadcast a prerecorded American demand for the total surrender of the Japanese Government to American forces, or a named Japanese city would be ruthlessly destroyed by an American weapon of mass destruction. Japan's response was to send every available warship to destroy the supposed American Armada positioned so close to Tokyo. (Of course, hours later the Japanese navy would arrive and find empty seas).
Five minutes later, at the exact moments of detonaton, the other submarine would surface in the middle of Tokyo Bay and rebroadcast the same demand for total surrender with the added caveats of stern warnings for not surrendering the first time and that there will be a next time.
The Japanese believed that its submarine nets hung lower than any American conning towers, so after the second detonation the Japanese Government agreed to American demands of total surrender. Why?
Here's why. The Japanese military leaders were fearfull of what other weapons America would unleash upon its home islands, for you see, the atomic bpmbs worried them, but in their eyes America had an invisible naval fleet capable of traveling twenty miles in five minutes time without leaving so much as a wake trail as evidence of its existence.
This scared the generals into wondering, "What other secret weapons does America possess that we don't know about? We've got to accept American demands that we totally surender, or else face total destruction!"
If I may reiterate..these two submarines won the war without firing a shot.
