Touted as "the real agricultural industrialization,” Shigeharu Shimamura's indoor agricultural center is producing 10,000 heads of lettuce a day, in a factory half the size of a football field.
Using LED lights, the energy cost is reduced by 40% compared to fluorescent lights - and the real kicker - water usage is just 1% of what it would take to irrigate an outdoor farm of the same size.
It is the childhood dream of Shimamura, a plant physiologist from the Miyagi Prefecture in eastern Japan.
GE has been continuously developinging the LEDs, specifically for this purpose. They are smaller, so more stacks of vegetables can be laid out, and they are able to resist the humid environments found in these plant factories. They run on specific frequencies to produce wavelenghts optimal for plant growth and are controlled to simulate day/night cycles
